John Walker Lindh is an American Taliban member captured during the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. He was detained and survived the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi, where CIA officer Johnny “Mike” Spann was killed. Lindh accepted a plea bargain in 2002 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He converted to Sunni Islam, trained at Al-Farouq camp associated with al-Qaeda, and fought with the Taliban despite US alignment with the Northern Alliance. He prefers the name Abu Sulayman al-Irlandi.
