John Rutledge was an American Founding Father, politician, and jurist. He served as one of the original associate justices and the second chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Rutledge also held the positions of first president and governor of South Carolina. Throughout his career, he played important roles in events such as the Stamp Act Congress, Continental Congress, Philadelphia Convention, and the South Carolina convention to ratify the Constitution. Although he was appointed as a justice of the Supreme Court by President George Washington, his nomination was ultimately rejected by the Senate.
