John Nevil Maskelyne, an English stage magician and inventor, is famous for inventing the pay toilet and other Victorian-era devices. He worked with magicians George Alfred Cooke and David Devant and his illusions are still performed today. Maskelyne’s book, “Sharps and Flats,” reveals cheating practices in games of chance and skill. In 1914, he founded the Occult Committee to investigate claims of supernatural powers and expose fraud in the field of magic.
