John MacGregor was an English explorer, travel writer, and philanthropist known for developing the first sailing canoes and promoting canoeing as a sport in Europe and the United States. He founded the British Royal Canoe Club in 1866 and the American Canoe Association in 1880. Prior to his exploration and writing career, MacGregor worked as a barrister in London. He was also a skilled artist, responsible for illustrating all the images in his travel books.
