John Lamb Reed OBE was a highly skilled English actor, dancer, and singer known for his nimble performances in the leading comic roles of the Savoy Operas, particularly with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. He was acclaimed as “the last great exponent” of these characters, excelling in Gilbert and Sullivan comedy roles. Reed joined the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1951 and rose to become the principal comedian by 1959. His talents included quick-witted clowning, dry humor, precise comic timing, and clear diction in patter songs. Even after departing the company in 1979, he remained active in performing and directing Gilbert and Sullivan productions in both Britain and America, leaving a lasting legacy in the genre.
