John Hartford was a versatile American folk, country, and bluegrass composer and musician known for his mastery of fiddle and banjo. He was recognized for his witty lyrics, unique vocal style, and extensive knowledge of Mississippi River lore. His most successful song, “Gentle on My Mind,” earned three Grammy Awards and a place in BMI’s Top 100 Songs of the Century. Hartford was renowned for his solo performances, effortlessly switching between guitar, banjo, and fiddle. He also introduced an innovative shuffle tap dance move and performed clogging while playing and singing. In 2010, he was posthumously inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
