John C. Breckinridge was a prominent American lawyer, politician, and soldier. He served as the 14th Vice President of the United States from 1857 to 1861 and was a member of the Democratic Party. Representing Kentucky in Congress, he ran for president in 1860 as a Southern Democrat. During the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army and later became the Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. Breckinridge was recognized for his advocacy of states’ rights, support for slavery, and his military leadership during the conflict.
