Johann Tetzel, a German Dominican friar and preacher, held the position of Grand Commissioner for indulgences in Germany. He offered indulgences on behalf of the Catholic Church in return for monetary donations, providing a pardon for sins that had already been forgiven. Tetzel’s methods, such as selling indulgences to raise funds for St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, were highly controversial and played a role in Martin Luther writing his Ninety-five Theses.
