Johan Vincent Galtung was a renowned Norwegian sociologist who founded the discipline of peace and conflict studies. He established the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) in 1959 and served as its first director. Galtung was instrumental in the creation of the Journal of Peace Research in 1964. He held the world’s first chair in peace and conflict studies at the University of Oslo in 1969 and later taught at several universities, including the University of Hawaii.
