Jim Lovell is a retired American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and mechanical engineer. He was a key member of the historic Apollo 8 mission in 1968, the first to orbit the Moon. Lovell later commanded the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970, successfully overcoming a critical failure and safely bringing the crew back to Earth. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and held various important roles within the Navy, including as a flight instructor and safety engineering officer. Lovell was chosen as an astronaut for the Gemini and Apollo programs, completing four spaceflights, including two to the Moon. He has received prestigious awards and co-authored the book Lost Moon, which was the basis for the film Apollo 13.
