He formed a successful spin partnership with Tony Lock at the club level, contributing to Surrey’s seven consecutive County Championship titles. Laker was also noted for his batting and fielding abilities and received prestigious awards. Following his playing career, he worked as a cricket commentator for BBC Sport.
