Childhood & Early Life
Jess Glynne was born on October 20, 1989, in Hampstead, England, to Jewish parents Laurence Glynne, an estate agent, and Alexandra (née Ingram), who worked for the ‘A&R’ division of ‘Atlantic Records.’ Her grandfather changed the original family name from Goldstein to Glynne. Jess Glynne grew up in Muswell Hill, North London and studied at the ‘Rhodes Avenue Primary School.’ In 2008, she completed her A-levels from ‘Fortismere School.’
At the age of 15 she applied for the TV show, ‘The X Factor,’ but left during auditions due to disagreement with the producers. Later she did a number of different jobs at boutique, hairdresser’s, fitness centers and an alcohol company.
Jess Glynne traveled around different places and on her return, took up a job in a music management company, through which she remained closely connected with artists and music industry. She attended an east London college, ‘Access to Music,’ and completed a one year music course. At this institute she came across song-writer Jin Jin and producer ‘Bless Beats,’ with whom she later collaborated for her songs.
Career
’Black Butter Records’ approached Glynne when they heard a composition by her and Jin Jin. They signed her to a publishing deal and later, in August 2013, she signed a contract with ‘Atlantic Records.’ At that time she was working in the brand management of a drink company, which she left for her music.
In 2013, ‘Route 84’ approached her for re-writing and singing his number, ‘My Love.’ (The song contained a sample which he was not allowed to use at that time.) Glynne featured in ‘My Love,’ which was released in October 2013 on DJ Annie Mac’s compilation album, ‘Annie Mac Presents.’
After its release, British band ‘Clean Bandit’ approached her for their song, ‘Rather Be.’ In January 2014, ‘Rather Be’ featuring Glynne was released as a single; it became a great hit and earned ‘Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording’ in 2015. It debuted at number 1 on the UK singles chart and was a top ten hit on the ‘US Billboard Hot 100.’
The music video of her song ‘Home,’ which was produced by ‘Bless Beats,’ was uploaded on internet in February, 2014. Her debut solo single, ‘Right Here,’ produced by ‘Gorgon City,’ was released in July 2014. It reached number 6 on the UK charts. Glynne performed at a number of music festivals and also toured around UK.
’Real Love,’ a joint single by ‘Clean Bandit’ and Glynne was released on November 16, 2014. It reached up to number 2 on the UK charts. Her next solo single, ‘Hold My Hand,’ came out on March 20, 2015 (her second as sole credited lead artist). It remained at number 1 on the UK charts for 3 weeks.
’Not Letting Go,’ a single by rapper Tinie Tempah, featured Glynne and reached number 1 on the UK singles chart. Around mid-2015 she had a vocal cords surgery and thus cancelled a number of live shows and music festival appearances.
In August 2015, her debut album ‘I Cry When I Laugh’ was released in the UK; it debuted at the top of the UK charts. Besides her regular contributors ‘Bless Beats’ and Jin Jin, it also featured other such artists as Talay Riley, Starsmith, Naughty Boy, Knox Brown and Switch. According to her, the debut album is about a relationship breakdown with a girl.
Her fourth single, ‘Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself,’ was released only a few days before her album and it topped the UK chart. Thus Glynne became the second (first being Cheryl) British Solo artist to achieve 5 number one singles in UK.
In November 2015, her song ‘Take Me Home’ was released as official charity single for ‘Children In Need 2015.’ As it reached number 6, it became her 8th top ten hit in the UK. Glynne commenced on a UK Tour, ‘Take Me Home Tour,’ in June 2016 and took a break after the tour.
In January 2018, Glynne along with American rapper Macklemore and Dan Caplen, featured on Rudimental’s single ‘These Days.’ By March 2018, the song reached number 1, making her first British woman in the UK chart history to have six number 1 singles. Her next single, ‘I’ll Be There,’ which was written by Glynne herself in collaboration with Aidan Chapman, was released on ‘The Graham Norton Show,’ on May 4, 2018. This proved her seventh number 1 song on the charts.
A new single, ‘All I Am,’ from her upcoming second album was released on August 17, 2018. Glynne’s second album, ‘Always In Between,’ is being launched (on October 12, 2018) in the chart that her debut album has yet to vacate even after 163 weeks.
