Jean-Marie Bastien-Thiry, a French Air Force lieutenant colonel and military air-weaponry engineer, is renowned for developing the Nord SS.10/SS.11 missiles. He became infamous for his unsuccessful assassination plot against French president Charles de Gaulle in 1962, as a response to de Gaulle’s approval of Algerian independence. Bastien-Thiry was executed by firing squad, marking the final instance of this punishment in France. His life and the assassination attempt have served as inspiration for various works of fiction, such as Frederick Forsyth’s novel The Day of the Jackal and its cinematic adaptation.
