James Schoolcraft Sherman was an American politician who served as a United States representative from New York for several terms. He also served as the 27th vice president of the United States under President William Howard Taft until his passing in 1912. Sherman, nicknamed ‘Sunny Jim’ for his friendly demeanor, was a well-regarded congressional committee chairman. He notably became the first vice president to fly in an airplane and to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game.
