James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, a Scottish nobleman, is famous for marrying Mary, Queen of Scots as her third husband. Accused of murdering Mary’s second husband, Lord Darnley, he was acquitted. Bothwell’s marriage to Mary sparked controversy and division in the country. Fleeing to Norway during a rebellion, he was arrested and spent the rest of his life imprisoned in Denmark. His professional life was characterized by political intrigue, marriage to royalty, and eventual downfall and imprisonment.
