James Francis Edward Stuart, also known as the Chevalier de St. George, made claims to the English, Scottish, and Irish crowns as James III of England and Ireland and James VIII of Scotland. He enlisted support from his Jacobite supporters and Louis XIV of France in his quest for the throne. Despite facing defeat in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and 1745, he persisted in asserting his claim until his passing in 1766. Following his death, his son Charles Edward Stuart continued the Jacobite succession.
