Ian Smith was a Rhodesian politician, farmer, and fighter pilot. He served as Prime Minister of Rhodesia for 15 years and led the predominantly white government that declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1965, which triggered the Rhodesian Bush War. Despite facing international isolation and economic sanctions, Smith held onto power until agreeing to majority rule in 1978 through the Internal Settlement. After Zimbabwe gained independence, Smith remained an outspoken critic of the government until his passing in 2007.
