Hugo Lafayette Black was an American lawyer, politician, and jurist who served as a U.S. Senator from Alabama and as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A Democrat and New Dealer, he supported Franklin D. Roosevelt in presidential elections. Black, known as a reformer, served on the Senate Education Committee. As a justice, he championed incorporating Bill of Rights liberties, held an absolutist view on the First Amendment, and advanced individual rights in significant cases.
