He was fatally shot by two Communist Party members, which led Joseph Goebbels to idolize him as a martyr for the Nazi Party. Wessel’s funeral in Berlin was attended by prominent Nazi figures, and he was utilized as a propaganda figure in Nazi Germany. The march he penned lyrics for was rebranded as the “Horst-Wessel-Lied” and was adopted as the official anthem of the Nazi Party during Hitler’s reign.
