Herodian, also known as Herodianus, was a Roman civil servant from Syria who wrote a historical work titled “History of the Empire from the Death of Marcus.” Covering the years 180 to 238 in eight books, his account of Elagabalus is considered more useful than that of Cassius Dio, despite some reliability concerns. Herodian may have been from Antioch, Syria, and lived in Rome for an extended period without holding public office. His writing style was praised for its clarity, vigor, and balanced approach between artistry and simplicity.
