Henry Ossawa Tanner, an American artist, achieved global recognition as the first African-American painter to do so. In 1891, he relocated to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julian and gained acclaim within French artistic communities. His paintings, including “Daniel in the Lions’ Den” and “Resurrection of Lazarus,” were displayed at esteemed art exhibitions like the Salon. The French government honored Tanner’s talent by appointing him as a chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1923.
