Henry Louis Gates Jr. is a prominent figure in American literary criticism, education, history, and filmmaking. He currently serves as the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and the director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. Additionally, Gates is a trustee of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. He is recognized for his work in rediscovering early African-American novels and for his numerous publications on the importance of African-American literature in the Western literary tradition. Gates also hosts the PBS series Finding Your Roots, exploring the genealogy and histories of various notable individuals.
