Harold Charles Schonberg, a prominent American music critic and author, was chief music critic at The New York Times from 1960 to 1980. In 1971, he became the first music critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Known for his support of Romantic piano music and his critical opinions on conductor Leonard Bernstein, Schonberg was a major figure in music criticism. He wrote many books on music and even published a work on chess.
