Gulzarilal Nanda was an Indian politician and economist renowned for his knowledge of labor issues. He held the position of Acting Prime Minister of India on two occasions, first in 1964 after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death, and then in 1966 following Lal Bahadur Shastri’s passing. Nanda’s time as Acting Prime Minister was brief, as new prime ministers were elected by the ruling Indian National Congress. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997, India’s highest civilian honor.
