Glafcos Ioannou Clerides was a prominent Cypriot statesman who played a vital role in Cyprus’ struggle for independence. A barrister and former Royal Air Force pilot, he was involved in the anti-colonial guerilla organization EOKA and contributed to drafting the country’s constitution. Clerides served as the first Speaker of the House of Representatives, briefly assumed the presidency during a critical period after a coup in 1974, and founded the center-right Democratic Rally. As President, he oversaw economic growth and facilitated Cyprus’ accession to the European Union.
