Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, also known as Il Grechetto in Italy and Le Benédette in France, was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker, and draftsman from the Genoese school. He gained recognition for his etchings and for pioneering the monotyping technique. Castiglione excelled in painting portraits, historical scenes, and landscapes, particularly focusing on rural settings with a strong presence of animals. His preferred theme was Noah’s Ark, frequently portraying animals boarding the Ark. Additionally, he produced innovative artworks inspired by the Old Testament, often featuring patriarchs and their animals, showcasing his diverse artistic abilities.
