Gerhard “Gerd” Barkhorn was a highly accomplished German military aviator during World War II, known for his leadership as a wing commander in the Luftwaffe. He ranks as the second highest-scoring fighter pilot in history, with over 300 aerial victories to his name. Barkhorn commanded various squadrons and groups, receiving numerous prestigious awards for his exceptional piloting skills and leadership abilities. Following the war, he continued his aviation career in the German Air Force of the Federal Republic of Germany until his retirement in 1975. Tragically, Barkhorn passed away in 1983 after a car accident.
