George Lloyd Murphy was a prominent American actor and politician recognized for his performances in Hollywood musicals during the period from 1930 to 1952. He was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1944 to 1946 and was honored with an Oscar in 1951. Murphy achieved a significant milestone by being the first notable American actor to be elected to statewide office in California, where he served as a U.S. Senator from 1965 to 1971. Notably, he is the sole U.S. Senator to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
