George Herbert Leigh-Mallory, an English mountaineer, played a key role in the initial three British Mount Everest expeditions. He honed his climbing abilities through experiences in the Alps and English Lake District. After serving in the British Army during World War I, Mallory left his teaching job to join the 1921 Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition. His accomplishments during the 1922 expedition included setting a world altitude record. Mallory famously encapsulated his drive to climb Everest with the phrase, “Because it’s there.”
