George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, was an English peer and politician who served as a member of parliament and Secretary of State under King James I. He resigned from most political offices due to a failed marriage alliance, publicly declaring his Catholicism. Calvert then focused on British colonization of the Americas, becoming the proprietor of Avalon in Newfoundland before seeking a more suitable spot further south. He obtained a royal charter for the Maryland colony, which was carried on by his sons after his death.
