Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb student, played a role in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which triggered the start of World War I. He was a member of the secret society Young Bosnia, which aimed to liberate Bosnia from Austrian control. Princip, driven by anti-Austrian sentiments, took part in a conspiracy to kill the heir to the Habsburg Empire. Following the fatal shooting of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo, Princip was convicted and received a twenty-year prison sentence. He passed away in 1918 as a result of tuberculosis exacerbated by harsh prison conditions.
