Fred Shuttlesworth was a prominent American civil rights activist and minister recognized for his pivotal role in combating segregation and racism. He was a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a key figure in the 1963 Birmingham Campaign. Shuttlesworth’s activism extended to Cincinnati, Ohio, before returning to Birmingham post-retirement. Despite tactical differences, he collaborated with Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement. Shuttlesworth’s lasting impact is commemorated through the Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport and the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award.
