Francis Bacon was a British figurative painter known for his raw and unsettling imagery focused on the human form. He rejected classifications and aimed to depict “the brutality of fact” in his work. With around 590 extant paintings, Bacon’s output includes series or variations on single motifs, such as bio-morphs, male heads, screaming popes, animals, crucifixions, and portraits. He gained recognition with the 1944 triptych “Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion,” sealing his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition.
