Folke Bernadotte was a Swedish nobleman and diplomat known for his important work during World War II and in the post-war period. He successfully negotiated the release of Danish Jews and non-Jewish prisoners from the Theresienstadt concentration camp under Nazi German occupation. In 1945, he received a surrender offer from Heinrich Himmler that was rejected by the allies. Bernadotte later served as the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict and was tragically assassinated in 1948 while carrying out his duties.
