He initially served in Kilkenny before relocating to Cork to further his mission. Renowned for promoting temperance, he led a movement that encouraged abstinence from alcohol. Mathew’s dedication was commemorated with the installation of statues in Cork and Dublin, and the naming of a bridge in Limerick in his honor. He also oversaw the construction of the Capuchin church in Cork.
