Elouise Pepion Cobell, also known as Yellow Bird Woman, was a tribal elder and activist, banker, and rancher. She was the lead plaintiff in the class-action suit Cobell v. Salazar, which challenged the US government’s mismanagement of trust funds for over 500,000 Native Americans. Her efforts led to a $3.4 billion settlement in 2010, the largest ever against the federal government, aimed at compensating account holders, buying back fractionated lands, and funding a scholarship program. Cobell’s work was posthumously honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
