She established the first Catholic girls’ school in the nation in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and founded the first American congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity. Seton’s commitment to education and religious life led to her canonization by the Catholic Church, making her the first person born in what would become the United States to receive this honor.
