Eliza Carpenter was a trailblazing African-American race horse owner and jockey who overcame the challenges of slavery to achieve success in the early Oklahoma racing circuit. She owned and raced numerous Thoroughbred horses for over thirty years, winning many races and earning a significant amount of money. Known for her skill in buying, training, and riding racehorses, Carpenter became one of the few African-American stable owners in the American West. She was a fierce competitor, often riding her own horses to victory in races.
