Earl Browder played a significant role in American communist activism as the leader of the Communist Party USA in the 1930s and 1940s. As General Secretary of the CPUSA, he wrote various political works, ran for President of the United States twice, and organized activities for the Communist International and Soviet intelligence in the US. Browder advocated for close cooperation between the US and the Soviet Union during WWII and transitioned the CPUSA into a political association in 1944. However, his failure to adapt to changing political circumstances led to his expulsion from the Communist Party in 1946.
