Rousseff started her political career in Porto Alegre, where she served as treasury secretary and Secretary of Energy in Rio Grande do Sul. In 2001, she joined the Workers’ Party and later became Minister of Energy under Lula. Rousseff was impeached in 2016 due to violations of budgetary laws.
