Sir David Stirling was a Scottish officer in the British Army who founded the Special Air Service (SAS) during World War II. He led the SAS in daring hit-and-run raids behind enemy lines in North Africa. Captured in 1943, he spent the rest of the war in captivity. After leaving the Regular Army, he founded the Capricorn Africa Society to fight racial discrimination. He later formed private military companies and was involved in various controversial activities, including a failed coup attempt in Libya.
