Brewster also made notable inventions in photography, including the stereoscope and stereoscopic camera. As a historian of science, he focused on the life of Isaac Newton and published a detailed biography of him. He played a key role in the Free Church of Scotland and was a founding member of the British Science Association. Brewster served as Principal of the University of St Andrews and later the University of Edinburgh, becoming a prominent figure in higher education in Scotland.
