Dahomey Amazons

Birthplace: Benin
The Dahomey Amazons, also known as the Mino, were a group of highly skilled female warriors who played a significant role in the military defense of the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa during the 19th century. They were known for their courage and audacity in combat, engaging in hand-to-hand combat against European forces. After the kingdom became a French protectorate, some Mino continued to secretly resist by assassinating French officers. Many struggled to adjust to civilian life after retirement, displaying a tendency towards conflict and finding it challenging to establish new roles in their communities.
