Corneliu Zelea Codreanu was a prominent far-right Romanian politician known for founding the ultranationalist and violently antisemitic Iron Guard. He gained recognition for his revolutionary message inspired by Romanian Orthodoxy and mysticism, which led to conflicts with the political establishment and involvement in acts of terrorism. Codreanu also co-founded the National-Christian Defense League, incited pogroms, and orchestrated political assassinations. Despite his party’s strong performance in the 1937 election, it was thwarted by King Carol II, resulting in Codreanu’s imprisonment and eventual assassination. His legacy continues to influence contemporary far-right movements.
