Cliff Thorburn is a Canadian retired professional snooker player known as “The Grinder” for his methodical playing style. He won the World Snooker Championship in 1980, becoming the first world champion from outside the UK. Thorburn was world number one in 1981-82, the first non-British player to achieve this. He won the Masters tournament three times and was the first to retain the title. He made history with a maximum break in a World Championship match and continued to compete in Seniors events before retiring in 2022.
