Claire Lee Chennault, an American military aviator, led the “Flying Tigers” and the Chinese Nationalist Air Force during World War II. He promoted fighter-interceptor aircraft and served as an aviation adviser and trainer in China. Chennault commanded the 1st American Volunteer Group and later U.S. Army Air Forces units in China. He had disagreements with General Joseph Stilwell and influenced President Roosevelt to have Stilwell removed. Chennault played a significant role in the China-Burma-India theater to combat the Imperial Japanese Army.
