He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and was instrumental in the Revolutionary War as a brigadier general in the Continental Army. Gadsden also held the position of Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina and was a successful merchant. He is best known for designing the Gadsden flag and being a signatory to the Continental Association.
