Christa McAuliffe, an American teacher and astronaut, was selected for the NASA Teacher in Space Project. With degrees in education and history, she taught social studies at Concord High School. McAuliffe was chosen to participate in the Space Shuttle Challenger mission STS-51-L to conduct experiments and teach lessons from space. Unfortunately, the shuttle broke apart after launch, leading to the tragic loss of all crew members. McAuliffe was later honored posthumously with schools named after her and awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
