Throughout his career, he advanced to the position of commander-in-chief of Bomber Command during WWII. He championed strategic bombing campaigns targeting German industrial zones and was instrumental in creating the Pathfinder Force. Portal also safeguarded RAF Coastal Command from potential Royal Navy oversight and opposed attempts by the British Army to create their own Air Arm.
