Charles Frank Bolden Jr. is a former Administrator of NASA, retired United States Marine Corps Major General, and astronaut with four Space Shuttle missions. Graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1968, he served as a Marine aviator and test pilot before becoming Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy. Bolden was appointed as NASA Administrator in 2009, making history as the first African American to hold the position. He retired from NASA in 2017 and was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2020.
